This week the filmprojects to be considered for financial support as part of the Go Cuba! programme were announced. As many as 52 projects were submitted, from which nine have been selected.
Go Cuba!, which started in 2015, is an initiative of World Cinema Amsterdam in cooperation with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs for financial support of young, independent Cuban filmmakers to enable them to produce their films. Its role is especially important as freedom of expression is insufficiently guaranteed in Cuba, despite the gradual changes of the past years.
The programme has been a huge success: more than fifty young Cuban filmmakers submitted their projects to World Cinema Amsterdam this year – significantly more than in the two previous years. The films were of high quality and the choice was not easy, but eventually the selection committee singled out the following nine entries:
Cuando truena… – Sisi Gómez Peña El desaparecido – Marcel Beltrán Fernández
La tendencia – Fabián Suárez Avila AdoleCe – Daiyan Fco. Noa Brandford
Twin Lotus – Patricia Ramos Hernández Obra de choque – Marcos Antonio Díaz Sosa
Las muertes de Aristides – Lázaro Lemus Lugo
Flying pigeon – Daniel Santoyo Hernández
Zoo – Carolina Fernández-Vega Charadán
These films will be showcased in the coming editions of World Cinema Amsterdam. During the next edition of World Cinema Amsterdam (17 to 26 August 2017) two full-length features and several shorts from the two previous Go Cuba! years will be presented to festival visitors.
