Like every year the competition programme forms the backbone of the festival. 9 films compete to win the World Cinema Jury Award. The festival opens with Félicité, on Thursday August 17th. We are honoured and happy to announce that the French-Senelagese director Alain Gomis will be present for the opening night and available for a q&a session during the festival. Félicité won the Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
The film portrays a strong and independant woman, who struggles to gather the money needed for her son’s costly surgery, poetically demonstrating the harsh reality of everyday life in Congo’s capital Kinshasa. It also features the music of the world famous band Kasai Allstars and the Kinshasa Symphony Orchestra.
The closing film is part of the competion as well: Una mujer fantástica by Chilean director Sebastián Lelio, who was highly acclaimed for his film Gloria in 2013.
