The ninth edition of World Cinema Amsterdam will open on Thursday the 16th of August with the Indian film Sir (2018) by Rohena Gera.
Sir touches the well-worn narrative “rich boy meets poor girl” that often results in saccharine romantic stories in Hollywood-produced films. In the hands of debuting director Rohena Gera, it turns into a beautiful, realistic drama that subtly depicts gender roles in India and especially how life in this country is determined by insurmountable class differences. But rigid as the class system may be, Gera shows that actual people sometimes have real feelings that transcend boundaries.
Sir is one of the nine nominated films for the € 5,000 World Cinema Jury Award. A three-member jury comprising of Aboozar Amini, Marcel Beltrán and Margarida Moz, from Afghanistan, Cuba and Portugal respectively will decide the winning film which will be announced on the closing night.
The nine nominated films can be seen in Rialto and De Balie. The complete programme will be online when the ticket sales starts. Ticket sales will start on Thursday, 2nd of August.
