World Cinema Amsterdam 2018 is all about independent Cuban film. What can you expect? Stories about growing up (AdoleCe) or about parents (La música de las esferas), about poor public transport (Habana paisaje cicular), about dying of AIDS in Havana (Último días en la Habana), about a Cuban ham radio operator receiving a signal of a Russian cosmonaut stranded in space (Sergio & Serguéi), just to name a few. This year’s edition will prove to you that Cuban films are very much worth your while. Below you can read more about the 9 feature films in the Cine Cuba programme.

What is it like to go to school in Cuba? This is what director Daiyan Noa and producer Claudia Expósito García depict using the experiences of their (step)daughter Cecilia. They documented her school days for eight years — from her last year in primary school up to her final high school year.

What happens when you fall from favour with the authorities? You become a nobody. This is what happened to Cuban poet Rafael Alcides. Once a celebrated man, he more or less vanished after the publication of a collection of critical poetry. Director Miguel Coyula, also ostracized by the Cuban authorities, shows how it is.

Santa y Andrés

Cuba, 1983: as an unwanted citizen for being gay and holding critical views, writer Andrés is exiled to a remote village. The Wolves of the East

But there’s more!
The 9 feature films are not the only Cuban films in the festival. The feature screenings will be preceded by the Cine Cuba shorts, and there will be specials, including a film about Cuban food. Furthermore a talk show about filmmaking in Cuba and of course music and dancing at the parties, which will take place in Rialto on the festival’s Saturdays. Click on the links for more information.
