Between Revolutions (Între revoluţii)

In the 1970s, an Iranian student named Zahra stays in Bucharest to study medicine, where she befriends a fellow student, the Romanian Maria. When the Iranian Revolution breaks out in 1979, Zahra returns to Iran, hoping to contribute to political and social change. Many changes actually happen, although generally not for the better, especially as far as women are concerned. Zahra never returns to Romania, but the two women stay in touch. Over the next decades, they exchange many letters about the upheaval in their countries and the position of women, but also about their deeply felt mutual affection.

Combining unique archival footage with the letters, director Vlad Petri tells the story of the two women. The archival footage is real, the letters were created by Petri himself with his co-screenwriter Lavinia Braniște. Petri thus organically merges documentary and fiction. Awarded the FIPRESCI Prize at the latest Berlinale.
