First films competition programme announced

Three impressive films from Bolivia, Indonesia and Japan.

My Small Land by Emma Kawawada, Nana by Kamila Andini and Utama by Alejandro Loayza Grisi are the first three titles of the competition programme and will also have their Dutch premieres at the festival.

My Small Land by Emma Kawawada, former assistant to Hirokazu Kore-eda, tells the moving story of a Kurdish family in Tokyo and touches on issues such as immigration and racism.

With Nana, director Kamila Andini delves into the life of a young woman whose husband and son have disappeared in the turbulent Indonesia of the 1960s during the Sukarno regime.

Sundance winner of the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize Utama shows the far-reaching consequences of climate change for the Quechua, who are forced to leave their homes due to severe drought.

Existence in diaspora is a recurring theme that connects many films in the festival and in the competition programme. Both director Emma Kawawada and Alejandro Loayza Grisi will be present at the festival.

Besides the annual WCA Competition, Cine Chile and GO CUBA! are also part of the festival. Part of the Cine chile programme are titles like the Dutch premiere of La Vaca que cantó una cancíon sobre el futuro (2022) by Francisca Alegría, Mis hermanos sueñan despiertos (2021) by Claudia Huaiquimilla and the debut film Perro Bomba (2019) by Juan Cáceres. The short film Tundra (2022) by José Luis Aparicio is part of GO CUBA!

World Cinema Amsterdam 2022 will take place from Saturday 20 to Saturday 27 August at the main venues Rialto VU, Rialto De Pijp and De Balie.
