These directors will be present


One of the best things of World Cinema Amsterdam is the presence of many filmmakers, happy to answer your questions after screenings. Due to the festival’s intimate atmosphere chances are big that you’ll find yourself swinging next to a filmmaker on the dance floor or talking to them while drinking a beer.

The following filmmakers will attend the festival:

Rohena Gera
studied at Stanford University and Sarah Lawrence College in the US, then worked as a screenwriter in Indian cinema. She has also worked on non-profit campaigns promoting peace and equality. Her micro-budget documentary What’s Love Got to Do with It? (2013) screened at the Mumbai Film Festival. Her debut feature, Sir premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2018. She will attend the festival from August 16 to August 19.

Yang Mingming
Known for her debut short Female Directors, one of the top Chinese independent films of 2012, which was screened at various international festivals. Her award-winning feature film Girls Always Happy is screened at this year’s edition of WCA. She will attend the festival from August 22 to August 25.

Marcel Beltrán
His work-in-progress documentary El desaparecído and his feature length documentary La música de las esferas will be shown as part of this year’s Cine Cuba programme. As a jury member for WCA2018 he will be in Amsterdam for the full period of the festival.

Marcelo Martinessi
His feature film Las herederas picked up the FIPRESCI Prize, Silver Bear for Best Actress and Alfred Bauer Prize at Berlin International Film Festival 2018.. You can meet him at one of the screenings on August 22, 23 or 24.

Niles Atallah
His beautiful feature film Rey, premiered at IFFR in 2017, and won the Hivos Tiger Competition Special Jury Award. He will be at the festival on August 20 for the screening of his film.

Daiyan Noa
Independent audiovisual producer, scriptwriter and poet, who created and produced several audiovisual projects including the Ciudad Submerged audiovisual event. Daiyan and his partner and producer Claudia Expósito García will be at the festival from August 18 to Aug 25 for their film AdoleCe.

Jorge Thielen Armand
His debut feature La Soledad world premiered at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Best Feature at the Miami Film Festival 2017. He will be present from August 20 to August 24.

Mohamed Ben Attia
His debut feature, Hedi, won Best First Feature and the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 2016 Berlinale. He was a festival guest at WCA in 2016 and returned with his film Weldi, the closing film of WCA 2018. He will be present from August 21 to August 25.

Carolina Jabor
Her film work includes commercials, television series, documentaries and feature films. Her film Liquid Truth won the Audience Award for Best Film at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival 2017. She will be present from August 22 to August 25.

Yimit Ramirez
Has made several fictions, documentary and animated short films, achieving international presence. Yimit will be present from August 19 to August 25 to attend the screenings of his short film Gloria Eterna.
