Nana

In the 1960s, Indonesian communists tried to carry out a coup, but the army violently suppressed their attempt. In the subsequent purges, countless people were killed as well. Nana, a young woman, barely manages to escape, but her husband and son are never heard from again. Many years later, she has remarried the wealthy landowner Darga and is living a seemingly carefree life. In her nightmares she is however haunted by the past. Something changes when she befriends Ina – an unlikely friendship, as Ina is her husband's mistress.

In Nana, director Kamila Andini, whose moving The Seen and Unseen was screened at WCA in 2019, tells a story about the power of friendship between women. She does this in an intoxicating visual style, letting the images linger with viewers for a long time. Based on the novel Jais Darga Namaku by Ahda Imran.

KAMILA ANDINI (1986, Indonesia) studied in Australia. Her directing debut The Mirror Never Lies screened in the Berlinale Generation 2012. Her second feature, The Seen and Unseen, screened at WCA 2019 and won a Generation International Jury Kplus Grand Prix. Her third, Yuni, won the Platform Prize at 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Nana is based on the novel by Ahda Imran, who co-wrote the screenplay.
