Hoofdrolspeelster Gabriela Cartol neemt namens regisseur Lila Avilés de World Cinema Jury Award in ontvangst voor La camarista
Op de slotavond van World Cinema Amsterdam 2019 reikten de jury's diverse prijzen uit. De World Cinema Jury bestond uit manager Hubert Bals Fonds Fay Breeman, filmmaker en producent uit Indonesië Nia Dinata en Nederlandse maker van films, televisieseries en reclames Hesdy Lonwijk.
Special Mention
Deze jury gaf eerst een Special Mention aan Divino Amor van Gabriel Mascaro uit Brazilië. De film wordt 9 januari uitgebracht door Cinemien.
Uit het juryrapport: "We feel the need to give a shout out to one outstanding film with a special jury mention. It is rare these days to encounter a new form of cinematic storytelling, that is bold but done with a strong purpose, ever so consistently."
World Cinema Jury Award
De World Cinema Jury Award, een award plus € 5000 voor een volgend filmproject, ging naar La camarista van Lila Avilés uit Mexico. Actrice Gabriela Cartol was aanwezig en nam de prijs in ontvangst.
Uit het juryrapport: "While cinema is often done on a grand scale to zoom out and present us with complicated plots and twists, tonight we feel the need to zoom in to the imperfect beauty that this film has to offer. It takes us behind the closed doors of an unknown world, that most of the time we take for granted. We were all very taken by the enigmatic main character who slowly reveals the desires behind her shy exterior. The film left a very strong mark in each of our hearts with outstanding scenes that are effectively simple, and contain many thoughtful details."
Naast de World Cinema Jury Award voor de beste competitiefilm en de World Cinema Audience Award voor de hoogst gewaardeerde publieksfilm is er dit jaar een gloednieuwe award bijgekomen: de World Cinema Exchange Award, in samenwerking met Het Filmgesprek.
World Cinema Exchange Award
Deze award geeft spraakmakende films over onze mens- en wereldbeelden een (extra) podium. De regisseur van de winnende film krijgt € 2500 voor zijn volgende film. De jury koos voor A Tale of Three Sisters van Emin Alper uit Turkije. De film wordt 7 november uitgebracht door Cherry Pickers.
Uit het juryrapport: "This film illustrates in a subtle and raw way the multiple dimensions of what it means to be human. Through the convincing characters and stunning images the film portrays our human struggle to overcome our own limitations. And despite being set in a specific culture the film addresses universal themes. The relatability of the emotions in the film will stimulate discussion among viewers."
World Cinema Audience Award
27 Steps of May van de Indonesische filmmaker Ravi L. Bharwani werd het hoogst gewaardeerd door het publiek en won daarmee de Audience Award. De regisseur ontvangt een bedrag van € 5000, ook hier bedoeld voor een volgend filmproject. Gully Boy en The Swallows of Kabul werden respectievelijk tweede en derde.
