Black Orpheus (Orfeu negro)
Carnival has kicked off in Rio, the streets are filled with swirling colours, rhythm and dance. At the height of all the heady celebrations, Eurydice arrives from the countryside. She has run away from home to hide from a stranger who she believes wants to kill her. Also in Rio is tram conductor Orfeu. Orfeu is engaged to Mira, or so she thinks. Orfeu meets Eurydice and they are instantly smitten. Unsurprisingly, Mira is not amused. Then suddenly Eurydice disappears... Orfeu sets out to find her.
This dazzling adaptation of the classical Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice was a huge international success, even more so due to the swinging soundtrack by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá full of bewitching bossa nova. Director Marcel Camus won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Starring Marpessa Dawn and Breno Mello.
