Heartbound

For the past 25 years, Sommai has been living in Jutland, Denmark with her husband Niels. She is not the only Thai woman who has moved from Thailand to Denmark: over 900 Thai women live in Jutland. Formerly a sex worker in Thailand, Sommai has now gathered so much experience and knowledge of Danish society, that she can advise and act as a matchmaker for Thai women who are looking for a Danish husband. She introduces these women, many of them from her home village in Thailand, to lonely Danish men.

Directors Janus Metz, best known for his documentary Armadillo and feature film Borg McEnroe, and his wife, anthropologist Sine Plambech, have followed four of these Danish-Thai couples for ten years. It may sound wonderful, especially for the Thai women who can escape the poignant poverty at home, but the reality is not always so rosy. False expectations, disappointments and homesickness turn out to be bigger obstacles than expected.
