On Mon August 30 with English subs at 8:20 pm

The 1979 Iranian Revolution cost young Mitra her life – she was betrayed and executed in 1981. Her mother Haleh fled the country, ending up in the Netherlands, where she has been living a successful and peaceful life for decades. Her peace comes to an abrupt end when Leyla shows up. Haleh is pretty sure: this is the woman who betrayed her daughter. But Leyla, a loving mother herself, doesn't seem to recognize Haleh. How sure is Haleh really? She tries to discover the truth with the help of her brother Mohsen.

Iranian-Dutch director Kaweh Modiri based the story on his eponymous 2020 novel about his family's background. Though it is based on factual events, he emphasizes that it is a work of fiction; an exploration of the reliability of memory and the role history plays in our lives. Can we ever shake it off?
