The past in/and the present: representations of Dutch colonial rule and resistance in Indonesian and Dutch media and culture
Indonesia and the Netherlands share a complicated history of 350 years of Dutch colonial rule and fierce resistance against it. Even to this day the colonial past is being written and re-written by contemporary Indonesian as well as Dutch filmmakers, novelists, journalists and academics. In both countries aspects of this historic period are perceived as contentious, sensitive and painful. Thus, it is interesting to learn how Indonesian and Dutch storytellers represent the shared colonial past in their works and what social, cultural and political implications this has for contemporary Indonesian and Dutch society at large.

In this talk show this topic will be discussed by Indonesian director Nia Dinata (Ca-bau-kan) Dutch film producer Sander Verdonk (De Oost), writer and journalist Dido Michielsen, and media scholar Arnoud Arps (University of Amsterdam). Presentation: writer/journalist Lara Nuberg (www.gewooneenindischmeisje.nl) and writer/media scholar Reza Kartosen-Wong (Het Parool and University of Amsterdam).

This talk show is produced in collaboration with Het Indisch Herinneringscentrum (IHC).

Entrance is free, but you need to get a €0-ticket.
